Having a beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime isn’t about luck. In fact, maintaining your ideal smile is all about the care you give it over time. Although your teeth are meant to last your whole lifetime, certain habits and lifestyle choices can put them at risk. Here are a few oral health tips to help you keep your perfect smile.
Don’t Skip Your Dental Routine
You’ve heard this advice your whole life, but it’s the most important thing you can do for your smile. Daily brushing and flossing of teeth are a must. Brush teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. Use gentle, circular motions. Using a toothpaste that contains fluoride will keep the outer layer of your teeth–the enamel–lustrous and strong. Floss every day. We recommend traditional stringed floss. This is the only way to get to those hard-to-reach areas in between teeth.
Eat Well to Feel Well
You’ve heard that you are what you eat. This is true even when it comes to your smile. Certain foods can be hazardous to your teeth. Sugar and foods high in carbohydrates lead to cavities, plaque, and gum disease. Foods that are very hard, like ice or popcorn kernels, can crack your teeth. Beverages like wine and coffee can stain your teeth. This is why we recommend a diet that is high in nutrients, like those found in fruits and vegetables. Be sure to drink plenty of water to rinse away debris and keep foods from staining your teeth. Keep all sweet foods to a minimum.
Protect Your Pearly Whites
To protect your teeth from getting knocked out while playing sports, wear an athletic mouthguard. To protect your teeth from chipping or enamel erosion, wear a nightguard if you know you clench your teeth. We can fit you for both at your next appointment.
Don’t Give Up on Your Smile
Perhaps you didn’t take great care of your smile for many years. Maybe you have misalignment that you think is beyond help. If you’re of the mindset that you will never have a perfect smile, you are wrong. We can help you. Modern dentistry can correct a myriad of dental problems, from the simple to the complex. Some of the services we offer include Invisalign®, dental implants, veneers, dental bridges, crowns and teeth whitening. It’s never too late to improve your smile.
